Woman lives with Big Cats!

I was reading this story my BF sent to me about a woman who lives in a HOUSE with two cheetahs, five lions and two tigers.

Can you just imagine this?.."..NO cheetahs on the kitchen counter!! ". I mean, don't get me wrong, I absolutely love cheetahs, but they are not the calmest of animals. They are constantly pacing nervously, quite hyper at times..I just can't see them curling up like a cat at the end of the bed by Momma's feet. Big cats aren't meant to be house pets!

Lion cubs are actually born with spots that help keep them safe from predators. As they grow, the spots disappear, though some adult lions keep a few spots on the legs. Unlike the tiger cub, these lions will have "aunties" in the pride that help him along. Female cubs tend to stay in the pride of their birth. Male cubs move along when their mane starts to emerge and wander about as bachelor males until they find a new home.

Yes, you heard it right..

The world's fastest animal -- the cheetah -- will soon roam the fertile plains of Greenwich?
That's correct: A private backcountry animal center has won federal approval to import three cheetahs from South Africa to its sprawling Greenwich campus, despite questions about public safety and its nonprofit status as a zoo.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently issued a permit to the zoo, Lionshare Farm, to import two male cheetahs and one female to its 95-acre site on Taconic Road, for breeding and education purposes.
The approval comes despite previous objections by some residents, including state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, about the safety of housing the predatory cats near private homes, schools and a golf club.

King Cheetah - Acinonyx jubatus rex

The King Cheetah is an extremely rare, regal and strikingly beautiful animal. At one time it was considered to be a separate subspecies. Main difference between our King Cheetah and the normal standard spotted Cheetah is that its coat pattern differs distinctively. The standard Cheetah's coat is generally a yellow or golden color with a circular spotted pattern of small black markings. The King Cheetah has spots that run together to form several (usually three) black stripes down its back from the crest of its neck to the top of the tail. They also sport dark patch shaped markings, irregular in size and shape along their sides and flanks.

There are estimated to be less than ten king cheetah living in the wild and the total world population is around 60 animals. Most of the ones in captivity were bred at the De Wildt Cheetah Centre in South Africa which has been very successful in raising them.

Are King Cheetah Pictures on Safari Possible?

Possible, but highly unlikely. The animal was regarded as a myth because it was seen so infrequently and between 1926 when it was first reported in Zimbabwe and 1975 when the first ever photograph was taken of one in the Kruger National Park there were only five reported sightings.

Your best bet of seeing one in the wild would seem to be the Timbavati area of the Kruger Park but you could drive around for a very long time and never find it.

In captivity the best place to see them is at the De Wildt centre where there are a number of them and they have been so successful with the breeding program that several have been exported to zoos worldwide.

The birth of a king cheetah at the centre in 1981 to normal parents put paid to theories that it was a separate subspecies and launched the breeding program that contributed to the majority of the worlds population of king cheetah being descendants of the De Wildt cats.

The unique coat pattern is as a result of a recessive gene mutation similar to that of the black leopard which needs to be present in both parents.

The cheetah cannot roar like other big cats. However, it can purr while inhaling.

Unlike other big cats, Cheetahs cannot climb trees and have poor night-vison.
